7 Essentials for a Great Pilates Zoom Session

Right now, Classical Pilates is doing all of our sessions via Zoom. But that doesn’t mean your Pilates session can’t be challenging and rewarding. In fact, with a little preparation and some simple equipment, a Zoom Pilates session can be just as beneficial as a studio workout.

Here’s what you need to make that happen:

1. Find the Right Spot

Before you start, you need to find the right space for your session. That area can be anywhere in your home, but it must have enough room for you to set up your mat and be able to extend your arms and legs long and wide enough to do the mat exercises. Your workout area should also be as free from clutter as possible, so you don’t step on or kick objects during your session.

2. You Need a Laptop or an iPad

You will need a laptop or tablet that is connected to the internet. My clients have found that a laptop is easier to adjust than the tablet, but either will do. You will also need to install Zoom (it’s free).

3. Set Your Laptop/Tablet for Optimal Viewing

Set up your laptop on a raised platform with the screen tilted down towards your mat. This makes it much easier for the instructor to view your entire body as you do your exercises. (One of my clients uses an ironing board which is the perfect height so think of that as a guide.) Also, make sure your camera is clean.

4. Set up Your Audio and Be a Good Listener

Make sure that the volume is up all the way so that you can hear the instructions clearly. Because you aren’t in the same room with your instructor, you can’t depend on non-verbal cues, so good clear communication is more important than ever. And bring your listening skills so you get the most out of each correction.

5. Turn Off Your Laptop/Tablet Notifications

Use the “Do Not Disturb” function on your computer so that email/text/call notifications don’t distract you and your instructor.

6. Have all Your Equipment Ready

You don’t need much equipment to have a great session but what you have should be handy. Aside from a mat (a yoga mat will do) some items to consider are a magic circle, light weights (1,2 or 3 lbs.), a pillow and a towel.

7. Have Fun!

Zoom Pilates is a challenging and invigorating workout and a great way to stay active, even when you can’t leave your home for a live session. Put aside all your other concerns and focus on having taking care of your physical and mental health and having a good time.
